DESCRIPTION:The last PhD and ECI meeting of the EUIMWP COST Action is planned to take place on September 21st\, 2021. It will have to be virtual\, unfortunately\, since due to the COVID situation organising an in-person meeting would be too risky. \nSimilarly to what has been done in the past meetings\, participants are invited to very briefly present the topic of their research and then have a round table session to facilitate knowledge exchange and future collaboration options. \nAs a reminder\, according to the COST Vademecum\, ECI is an individual who is within a time span of up to 8 years from the date they obtained their PhD/doctorate (full-time equivalent). \nThe agenda will be published briefly.

SUMMARY:Emerging technologies for 5G networks
DESCRIPTION:Dear EUIMWP participants\, \nOn behalf of the MC of the EUIMWP (CA 16220) COST Action\, we are pleased to announce the Training School entitled “Emerging technologies for 5G networks”. It will take place in Thessaloniki (Greece)\, from 10th to 13th of September 2019. \nFuture 5G networks will give rise to a wide range of new services\, including enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) applications\, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication and Internet of Things (IoT)\, addressing the needs of multiple vertical markets. The large variety of demanding applications and use case scenarios have been setting highly demanding end-user requirements\, such as low latency\, high traffic capacity\, spectral efficiency\, low energy consumption for the end-to-end communication\, placing tremendous load on the underlying infrastructure of the fronthaul network. On the verge of the 5G era\, Fiber Wireless technologies and Integrated Photonics will play a pivotal role in supporting the service and network requirements\, while the emerging converged Fiber Wireless network architectures relying on PONs and Optical Transport Networks will certainly require enhanced Medium Access Control schemes and more efficient resource allocation mechanisms\, stimulating intense Research & Development efforts in this direction. \nOrganized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) within the frames of the EUIMWP Cost Action and the 5G-PHOS 5G-PPP Phase II IA\, the European Training aims to cover all topics of Emerging Technologies for 5G\, with the main focus being on \n\nPassive optical networks: architectures\, Media Access Control and Resource Allocation techniques.\nFiber-wireless (FiWi) access networks: Challenges and opportunities\n\nThe training will be hosted at the facilities of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation (C.I.R.I.\, http://kedek.auth.gr/ ) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki\, which hosts the laboratory facilities of the Wireless and Photonic Systems and Networks research group (WinPhos\, http://winphos.web.auth.gr/ ) and its 5G testbed infrastructure. DESCRIPTION:Dear EUIMWP participants\, \nWe are happy to invite you to participate in the special session entitled “Integrated Microwave Photonics in Access Networks”\, which will be held during Sep 2nd and 3rd within FOAN 2019\, in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). \nThe session will be chaired by Prof. Bostjan Batagelj\, Prof. Eszter Udvary Gerhátné (both MC members from this Action) and Prof. Adriana Lipovac. \nThe EUIMWP (CA 16220) COST Action will reimburse the travel\, accommodation and meals expenses of 25 eligible presenters\, according to COST rules. SUMMARY:3rd CG\, 4th MC and 4th WG meetings in Prague
DESCRIPTION:CTU\, Faculty of Electrical Engineering\, Technicka 2\, Prague 6 (Metro Line A\, Station Dejvicka)\, Czech Republic \nMC meeting  \nThe MC met in Prague for 4th time\, with 22 countries represented. The MC members were informed about the progress of the Action\, in terms of budget expenditure during the last Grant Period (GP2)\, activities planned during GP3\, scientific development\, etc. \n \nWG meeting  \nDuring two consecutive days\, the members of the 6 Working Groups got together in Prague\, where the WG leaders presented their progress. The participants had also the chance to have a break-out session\, where they were divided into smaller groups\, discussing in parallel.

SUMMARY:1st PhD and ECI meeting in Slovenia
DESCRIPTION:Dear EUIMWP participants\, \nHi\, we are pleased to announce you that Prof. Boštjan Batagelj and his team have offered to host the 1st EUIMWP PhD and ECI meeting in Ljubljana (Slovenia). The meeting will be held from January 31st to February 1st\, 2019\, at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering\, Tržaška 25\, Ljubljana\, Slovenia \nThis meeting aims to provide an opportunity for networking between ECIs and PhD students. We believe that at this early stage of their career the interaction can be very useful in terms of scientific knowledge\, exchange of ideas and potential collaborations. To be more concrete: \na) By allowing the ECIs to give short open-type presentations (i.e in form of discussion papers) they can be aware of “who is doing what” in integrated Microwave Photonics\, what are the problems and challenges their peers are facing and more importantly if they can provide help\, comment or feedback on how to tackle them in light of their experience. This could lead to personal collaborations that can be later formalized by means of STSMs. \nb) Moreover\, ECIs might find that they are trying to solve similar problems with different approaches so a benefit can be obtained by teaming up. Equally important\, new challenges can be identified were two or more ECIs can team to work together in order to find solutions. \nc) The meeting can be very useful in terms of exchanging experience on technical approaches\, interactions with foundries\, software use\, design approaches…  Interactions can also cover issues related to measurements and characterization. Again\, in this case the interaction can provide a more detailed information of common problems that ECIs face when carrying out this work. SUMMARY:Integrated Microwave Photonics: Enschede (the Netherlands)
DESCRIPTION:Dear EUIMWP participants\, \nOn behalf of the MC of the EUIMWP (European Network for High Performance Integrated Microwave Photonics\, CA 16220) COST Action\, we are pleased to announce the Training School entitled “Integrated Microwave photonics: from idea to chips”. It will take place in Enschede (the Netherlands)\, from 26th of February to 1st of March\, 2019\, and will be organized by LioniX International. \nThe training is based on the recently developed hybrid integrated microwave photonics chip platform developed by LioniX International\, which combines the low-loss silicon nitride (TriPleX) waveguide technology with indium phosphide (InP) chip-based active components\, such as gain diodes\, modulators\, and detectors in order to have a compact and robust multi-chip module. The combination of active InP and low loss TripleX allows the implementation of several functionalities on-chip\, e.g. filtering\, beamforming\, taking advantage of the strength of each material. SUMMARY:Photonic Integrated Circuit design training
DESCRIPTION:After last year‘s successful edition\, a new Photonic Integrated Circuit design training will be held again in the facilities of VLC Photonics in Valencia (Spain) from Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th of January 2018\, co-located with the 2nd Photonic Integration Week.  \nThis training is oriented to companies or institutions that want to get started in photonic circuit design\, or for those that already having a basic knowledge and want to improve their design skills.  \nMoreover\, the EUIMWP (European Network for High Performance Integrated Microwave Photonics) COST Action (CA 16220) will offer a fixed grant (amount still to be confirmed) to trainees coming from COST countries and Near Neighbour Countries. These grants aim to cover travel\, accommodation and diet expenses of trainees during the attendance to the PIC design course. Please note that the grants will be given in a first come first served basis\, and that the final deadline to register is Friday 12/01/18.  \nAttendees will also have the chance to fabricate the designs they have done or initiated during the training at an upcoming multi-project wafer run in the silicon nitride platform of the CNM foundry.  \nThe agenda of the training will be as follows: \n  \n \nIf you want to join this training\, please contact us before Friday 12/01/18 at info@vlcphotonics.com and you will get the registration form and all training details and logistic information. \nThis training will be the end of an exciting week started on Monday and Tuesday with the 2nd edition of the Photonic Integration Week\, PIW2018\, that will combine industrial presentations\, business to business meetings\, scientific and technical speakers and training activities. The event will be held at the Technical University of Valencia (UPV)\, in Spain. \nThe PIW2018 will start with two Workshops under the framework of the project H2020 PICs4All (Photonic Integration Circuits Accessible to Everyone) and the Spanish Network of Excellence PIC4TB (Photonic Integration Circuits for Telecommunications and Bio Sciences). Industrial keynote speakers will provide the commercial perspective of use of photonic integration technologies at different positions of the supply chain\, from component manufacturers\, system integrators and end users of these technologies.
